Open Arcade Architecture
Open Arcade Architecture is an initiative that encourages the development of hardware and software, based on an open architecture PC reference platform, for game arcades, location-based entertainment, and high-end visual entertainment for the home.

The Open Arcade Architecture Forum Overview
On July 14, 1997, Intel announced the formation of
Open Arcade Architecture Forum (OAAF) an industry association with more than 60 members, to promote the development of arcade systems based on the Pentium® II processor. The OAAF seeks to create marketing opportunities for arcade and location-based entertainment, which will provide consumers top-quality games in arcades and, ultimately, in homes.

OAAF Mission Statement
The purpose of the Open Arcade Architecture Forum is to facilitate and expedite the development of compatible high-end hardware and software utilizing OAA based on Pentium® II processor and future processors.

OAAF Goals

  1. Increase awareness by hardware and software vendors, integrators, publishers, and users of the benefits of long-term strategic planning while sharing technical roadmaps that will assist in bringing product to market in a timely manner.
  2. Sponsor interoperability, performance and compatibility forums.
  3. Promote market development in the areas of arcade, location-based entertainment, and high-end home entertainment, thus enlarging customer bases in each of these areas.
  4. Grow market opportunities for software and hardware vendors, system integrators, and publishers through the exchange of ideas and matchmaking.
OAAF Membership
Membership is open by invitation to professionals in the game development industry. Currently membership is free, but a fee-based membership model may be implemented at some later date.

OAA Forum History
On March 24, 1997, Intel announced the Visual Computing Initiative (VCI) which has as its goal the delivery of lifelike interactive experiences from workstations to volume PCs. Intel is projecting the growth of 3D computing performance to be a 10x increase over the next three years. Recognizing that the delivery of these computing technologies requires a high level of cooperation among hardware and software vendors, Intel, along with other members of an OAA working group, announced its first hardware reference platform on April 25, 1997. The Open Arcade Architecture Forum was subsequently formed in June of 1997.

OAA Forum Operating Procedures
We will establish working groups on areas of common interest (OAA awareness, performance/compatibility recommendations, LBE market development, Arcade market development, Software distribution channels) following first Forum meeting.

Term
Depending on the ongoing activities of OAA Forum, its activities may be renewed annually.

Activities
The OAA Forum plans to facilitate the development and deployment of OAA-compatible products through five activities:

  1. Quarterly meetings: At various trade shows and conferences throughout the year to review its charter, purpose, and progress of ongoing activities.
  2. Strategic Market Direction Workshops: Members are encouraged to share pre-release (non-confidential) technical data (Whitepapers, design guides, app notes etc.), beta versions of products, and long-range roadmaps so as to foster compatibility and increase speed of adoption of technology by the market. Each member will receive 5 free copies of hardcopy spec (automatic distribution).
  3. Web site: A dynamic web site will serve as a clearing house for OAA hardware specifications, membership information, events calendar, OAA white papers, press releases, and market development ideas. OAA Forum members would have password permission to access non-public information if needed.
  4. Interoperability, Performance and Compatibility: Members will be encouraged to test their implementations with each others' products to demonstrate a consistent, rich end user experience at periodic "plug-fests."
  5. Cooperative marketing: The Forum will look to coordinate efforts and build increased synergy via joint marketing communications projects including public relations and advocacy. It will also encourage matchmaking for distributing OAA-compliant titles.
